Four BSC samples with one dominating and indicated species each. Net photosynthesis (open circles) and dark respiration (black squares; related to surface area) versus thallus water content (expressed as equivalent to mm H2O precipitation). Initially fully water soaked samples were measured until CO2 exchange completely ceased with dehydration. Hatched area indicates range of water content at which 90% of the maximum net photosynthesis is attained. Experimental conditions: rel. air humidity 80%, 200 μmol photons/m2 · s PAR, temperature: 15°C.
