Climate tipping elements occur where biomass storage is high and at risk for large losses due to climate change (Lenton et al. 2008). Three climate tipping elements are shown in blue (frozen regions), green (tropical forests), and yellow (boreal forests) overlayed on a map of terrestrial vegetation and soil carbon storage. The Red dots indicate flux tower locations, which are largely located outside of the tipping element regions, illustrating the need for satellite measurements to fill gaps in ground sampling.
