(a) Negative relationship between specificity and average impact over all exploited hosts (r = -0.81, p < 10- 5, R2 = 0.71; similar results were obtained for cumulative impact). (b) Negative relationship between specificity and higher impact (phage-wise) across all exploited hosts (r = -0.66, p < 10-5, R2 = 0.68). These results indicate that more specialised phages have lower impacts than generalists even for the host on which they are more adapted.
